In the days leading up to Battlefront EA has teased us with a number of trailers and images to keep the hype building. Today they’ve released a trailer that should peak the interest of anyone interested in the game. You can find their latest trailer, for the Battle of Jakku, right here;
As a quick note for those who don’t know, the Battle of Jakku was a major battle that occurred between the growing rebel forces and the remaining imperial army about a year after the destruction of the second Death Star, and twenty nine years before The Force Awakens. Jakku is the planet seen in the first Force Awakens trailer where the dilapidated hull of a Star Destroyer can be seen laying abandoned in a desert. The Battle of Jakku was the battle that resulted in this areal graveyard. So as free DLC for every player, the battle of Jakku will be available for download on December first for those who pre-ordered the game, and one week later for all those who didn’t.
Now, on to the trailer. The footage, though short, makes clear that they stayed true to their claim that they were trying to create an atmosphere of chaos and destruction in the battle. Starfighters are strafing the ground and plummeting out of the sky, AT-ATs and AT-STs are marching forward blasting their canons at anything that moves, there’s wreckage and fire everywhere, troops are charging over the dunes and through the rubble and getting gunned down left and right, and, perhaps most attention grabbing, there’s a damaged Star Destroyer falling out of the sky above directly toward the combatants below. The sense of chaos is clearly there, and, without having played it yet, I feel that the battle will be one of great Imperial and Rebel loss.
Additionally, the battle will give us a bit of backstory and context regarding the state of affairs in The Force Awakens. While the movie takes place twenty nine years later, and the galaxy is bound to be in drastically different circumstances, the events on Jakku will doubtlessly give us context for how everything got to that point, and how the Rebel Alliance fared after the events of Return of the Jedi.
It’s definitely a showdown to look forward to, and I hope to see you all there!
