We have been hearing a lot about the main cast of The Force Awakens but as far as Luke, General Hux, and Supreme Leader Snoke, they all still remain a mystery. So who is Supreme Leader Snoke? Entertainment Weekly gives us a little insight onto the character. So far, we have no idea what he looks like, and according to Serkis, neither did they when they first started shooting.
“When we first started working on it, he had some rough notions of how Snoke was gonna look, but it really hadn’t been fully-formed and it almost came out of discussion and performance,” Serkis says. Snoke kept changing, not only through principle photography, but even after. (So any “early concept art” that may be floating around online is probably nowhere near what this dark-hearted character looks like.)
We do know for sure that he’ll be a motion capture character much like the mysterious Maz Kanata. The only two motion capture characters in the whole movie. Serkis goes on to explain why they did not just use traditional makeup and costume.
“No, no,” the actor says. “The scale of him, for instance, is one reason. He is large. He appears tall. And also just the facial design – you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]”
So who is Supreme Leader Snoke? All we know about him is so far is the name and that he wields the dark side. Where did he come from and what are his motives? Many have suggested that he’s a character that we have seen before, whether it be in the books or comics. EW even suggests that he may have been damaged by the battles that took place between the Rebellion and the Empire.
“No, he’s a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly-introduced character,” Serkis says. “He’s aware of what’s gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it’d be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree.”
The have been rumors that there is a character that is seeking artifacts specific to the Jedi. It could possibly be the pirate Maz Kanata, but if you have read Aftermath. There are a few mysterious characters that are searching for things that belonged to Darth Vader himself. There is also a mysterious figure that leads a small remnant, possibly the strongest of the remnant fleets that speaks to our main Imperial Lead at the end, suggesting that he is sifting out the weak from the Empire to build something stronger. Possibly the new Emperor.
“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful,” Serkis says. “Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”
So not a lot of new information on Snoke, but we get a little idea of what we can expect to see from this new villain. Hopefully we’ll learn more about him when the movie releases!
