Since The Force Awakens, there have been a lot of fan theories and questions about what happened in the last 30 years after Return of the Jedi. We are introduced to new characters who have won the hearts of the fans. One of the characters we know little about, and apparently she knows little about herself as well. One fan in particular was able to sit down and talk to Abrams himself during the Director’s Series Discussion at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Chris Rock sat down with director JJ Abrams and asked him the question that has been on everybody’s mind. “Who are Rey’s parents?” Now we are all familiar with how secret JJ can be with his movies, but he may have revealed more questions for everyone.

Abrams said “Her mother and father were not featured in The Force Awakens. So I can’t possibly in this moment tell you who they are,” he continued. “This is all I will say: It’s something that Rey thinks about too.”

So a lot of popular theories about her being a Solo, Skywalker, and Kenobi have been swept aside. But could Abrams be up to his old tricks? You may remember back in Star Trek 2 Into Darkness, a lot of people speculated on Benedict Cumberbatch being Kahn, Abrams told fans that he was not. So do you believe Abrams is telling us the truth? Or do you think we have yet to be introduced to her parents? Tell us your thoughts below or on our forum Echo Base!

UPDATE: After the Q&A, EW caught up with J.J. Abrams and he clarified his comments. The director says he was only trying to point out that The Force Awakens builds up the mystery of Rey’s parents without resolving it. “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world,” Abrams said.
