Lucasfilm has been really good at keeping things for Rogue One hidden with only revealing little bits about the main story and the characters that will lead us on the adventure that would spark the events for A New Hope. For those of you that are fans of The Clone Wars, you will be excited to see that the movies will indeed take characters from the animated series and bring them to life. Forest Whitaker will be playing the once aged Onderon hero (Saw Gerrera) that we remembered fighting the droid army on his home planet. Then, he fought alongside his sister Steela and Anakin Skywalker who has now become his enemy, Darth Vader.
If you remember back in season 5, he coined the famous line from the trailer back in the Clone Wars. “If you continue to fight, what will you become?” Well, it looks like we will see what path it took him as he leads the rebels to their first true victory over the Empire. Kathleen Kennedy gives us a little insight to his character.
“Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy tells EW. “He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”
One reason we saved his reveal until now, in addition to him having a deeper backstory than the other new characters, is that Saw is an ally to the Rebel squad in Rogue One, but he’s not really one of them. “He’s off on his own,” Kennedy says.
We get a bit of this in the show Star Wars Rebels, with the lead group being separate from the Rebel Alliance but also being their own entity. Maybe one of the reasons why there has been no real success among the rebels until Luke shows up and brings them all together.
So with that in mind, many fans are hoping that we will get to see more characters from the animated series come to life in the anthology films. What characters would you like to see come back? Even if they had a minor role in the series. Let us know your thoughts on our community forum Echo Base!
