Mace Windu, the premier Jedi wielding his iconic purple lightsaber, has reportedly survived his fall in his encounter with the Sith Lord Darth Sidious.
In a Fan Q&A with Samuel Jackson, a Twitter user asked “Who’s idea was it to kill Mace Windu? Just curious. He’s a great character.” to which Samuel replied “As in most Star Wars movies, it was George Lucas’ idea to kill Mace Windu. He said he had killed all his other important characters and all the other movies were leading up to that and he said the only person who he had left to kill that would mean anything in Episode III that would mean anything would be me. I was trying to figure out like really? Can’t you just injure me, or whatever? But in my mind, I’m not dead. Jedi can fall incredibly high distances and not die.” So, in Jackson’s mind, Mace Windu has survived.
Jackson was so in love with the idea of Mace Windu surviving the he brought it up to George Lucas, which he told interviewers at Entertainment Weekly that he was still alive. When asked, he replied “Of course he is! Jedi can fall from amazing distances. And there’s a long history of one-handed Jedi. So why not?” And according to him, after he had survived his fall he just laid low like Obi-Wan on Tatooine.
However, he hadn’t shared his views with anyone other than George Lucas. And “George doesn’t have anything to do with it anymore.”. But, when Jackson asked about Windu, George was like “I’m okay with that. You can be alive.” So, seeing as George Lucas wrote the first two trilogies, can he make that call? Is Windu still alive? Or, will Disney pull the plug on this developing theory? And, in future cartoons or comics, would you like to see an aged Windu fighting off the Empire? I know I would!
